Ha! The "Cubs suck" standard issue insult won't work now jerks! Although I'm pretty sure I was muttering "Sox suck" as they won the world series...
You should have said "Thanks! It is a nice hat, and it cost me a pretty penny, I might add. Cheerio!" That would have baffled him and made him feel small. Perhaps even reflective of his short-sighted epithets.

Seems to me you have learned the local lingo. Your profs should respect you for this. Any self respecting anthropologist would have known to call the guy a jagoff.
