Hi everyone. I know I have been a bad blogger lately but I have been spectacularly busy and lazy recently. I am writing today to ask if anyone knows what all the activity was this afternoon on Paulina. I was walking home from the grocery and noticed flashing lights several blocks south of Fargo. It seemed that it may have been the roving group of police SUVs you sometimes see around. I was particularly concernedas it was right around the time kids were getting out of school. I was carrying groceries home and could not investigate.

Also, I wanted to make an announcement that I am going to change the content of this blog somewhat. I was going to start another blog that is not so "community only" focused to share with family and friends but decided that having a blog that just covers anything I might be interested in would be easier to maintain. I will still post about community issues when I have news or an opinion.

Finally, you may have noticed the new police camera that went in on Ashland and Howard. As much as I appreciate that these cameras might provide additional security in the areas in which they are located, I wonder what effect it has on businesses and investors. Do they think it is an added security or do they think, "I am not going to move my business to an area that needs a police camera."?

As someone who works near some areas where there are police cameras, I can attest that I use them as an indicator of a "high crime area" and I tell students not to go to that area. It's unfortunate that I now live in such an area. Had that light been up back in March, when we bought our condo, it might have negatively influenced our decision to buy in Rogers Park...

That was kind of my thinking. We looked at places near Morse before we bought further north and that blinking blue light was a beacon leading us away. Though pleased that they are finally cracking down on the dealers in the park up there, I'd rather see a squad car stationed there 24/7 than a camera with a flashing light on it. At least turn the light off. It's like the worst X-mas decoration I have ever seen. I am sure criminals know it's there.

I am glad I bought when and where we did though. This street has improved a great deal in the last year as has Greenview. They are putting up a lot of new street lights and we don't see as much dealing as we used to.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely do not regret buying on Fargo. In fact, we love our building (plumbing problems and all) and the street. But, I worry about the camera deterring other potential neighbors from investing in our area. Though, I'm still confident that the continued improvement in our area will go a long way.

As for the "Police SUV's"
I'd like to read more about this too. Did they have CPD markings on them?
This wasn't parking enforcement, or one of theose trucks with the thing that checks the validity of city stickers?

No. I have seen them on a few occasions. They are unmarked but they have lights mounted in the grill and other incinspicuaous spots that become very obvious once turned on. Inthe past I have seen them in groups of 3 or 4. I thought they might be associated with some special task force or something. I've also seen one vehicle that is marked with a city logo that has all kinds of communications equipment mounted to it.
