It has come to my attetnion that there is a planned station clean up for the Thorndale El stop that has been organized by the Edgewater Community Council. I believe they intend to do a deep cleaning as well as painting, and perhaps some general repairs. I have asked for details as to how they were able to organize this effort as I believe that the Morse and Jarvis stops could really benefit from a similar effort. The sights and smells are currently unacceptable. The stairwell on Jarvis smells so strongly of urine that my wife and I hold our breath and run down the stairs. I will keep you abreast of details as they become available and would appreciate any guidance from anyone with previous experience with these types of projects.

Thanks James. I think the biggest challenge will be trying to organize this before it gets too cold. I have never worked with the CTA before and have no idea what I am getting myself into.
I think a power washer would be essential. I think there are also some specialty products for "biologically based" smelliness...used for kennels and whatnot. I could do some research if you want.
Looking forward to hearing what Edgewater says. Spent some time on the 48th ward site today...we can learn a lot from those folks.
Also, speaking of urine, I ran into a petition for a dogpark in Edgewater planned for Hollywood Park. Their organizing website, www.hollywoof.org, is a model of what I think a good community project website should be. These people really did their homework. I am thinking of volunteering so I can learn more...
I've sent a couple of emails but have yet to receive a response. Perhaps if I expressed interest in helping them I would get a little attention.
As for the dog park, I know someone is working on getting the park next to the El on Fargo and Ashland returned to dog park status. They tried it previously but gang bangers were letting vicious figh dogs run amok and it had to be closed down. There is never anyone there except vagrants sleeping on benches or in the bushes. I have never seen dealers/users in there as it would be hard to get away if the cops rolled up.
Yes, I bet if you offered to help with some of the dirty work, they would be more forthcoming...you'd get to meet the organizers there on the clean up days.
I'd be happy to help them with that too if it would aid the information gathering. Let me know...
As for the dog park...what really impressed me was the organization behind their project. An interesting model on a number of levels...
Could be that RP is not ready for a dog park yet, due to the gang issue.
A good project to keep on the back burner for the day the neighborhood is a little more civilized.
Another think I noticed is that people often let there dogs run free on the tennis courts in the winter as well as inside the baseball diamond north of where everyone met last night. So long as you walk your pooch beforehand and noone complains I am sure the police have better things to do.
